Why would a British voice actor and one of the biggest pop stars on the planet turn up in the same search? The answer sits inside one cinema screen in London. Sean Connolly and Ed Sheeran were both in the audience at the January 2015 European premiere of Shaun the Sheep Movie, only a few rows apart, and neither found out until the film was over.
This guide separates fact from rumor. You will see who each man is, what actually happened that Sunday, why Snow Patrol’s Nathan Connolly keeps muddying the results, and quick answers to the questions people ask most. Everything about Sean Connolly and Ed Sheeran below is drawn from Connolly’s own 2015 blog posts, published cast credits and press coverage of the premiere.
Quick answer:
- Sean Connolly voiced ten characters in Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015).
- Ed Sheeran attended the London premiere as a guest. He was not in the cast.
- They never met that day. Connolly learned afterward that Sheeran had been nearby.
- There is no documented friendship, family tie or joint project.
Who Is Sean Connolly?
Sean Connolly is a British actor and voice artist. He grew up in Derbyshire with Anglo-Irish parents, moved to Birmingham in the mid 1980s and trained at the Birmingham School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art. That is also where he met his wife, the actress Bella Hamblin.
His first theatre job was playing the Cheshire Cat and Humpty Dumpty in Alice in Wonderland in Barnsley. His British television debut came in Boon in 1986. Later credits include the feature Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2001), and he co-produced the 2012 paranormal thriller The Casebook of Eddie Brewer.
Sean Connolly as an Actor and Voice Artist
Most of his recognition comes from voice work, especially with Aardman Animations and the BBC. Here is a snapshot of what he has done:
- Rex the Runt: about 30 characters across 13 episodes of the claymation series.
- Little Prairie Dogs (CBeebies, 2010): every male prairie dog across ten episodes.
- JoJo & Gran Gran: the voice of Ezra.
- Audio drama and radio: a Sontaran in the Doctor Who audio world, and Keith Horrobin in The Archers.
A voice artist builds a whole cast with one throat. That skill is exactly why animation studios keep calling him back.
Connolly’s Connection to Shaun the Sheep
In Shaun the Sheep Movie he voiced ten characters. Published credits list a Maître D, a golfer, stylists, an angry panto horse and several hospital characters. He later played Hector the head llama in the 2015 special Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas.
The film was directed and written by Mark Burton and Richard Starzak. It earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 88th Academy Awards, which makes Connolly’s ten roles part of an award-recognized production.
Who Is Ed Sheeran?
Ed Sheeran is an English singer-songwriter, born on 17 February 1991. He grew up in Framlingham, Suffolk, and moved to London in 2008 to chase a music career. That Suffolk connection matters later in this story.
Ed Sheeran’s Career in Music
Sheeran signed to Asylum Records in 2011 and released his debut album + that year, with “The A Team” and “Lego House”. He won two BRIT Awards in 2012. His second album, x, came out on 23 June 2014 and reached number one in the UK and the US.
In 2015, the year of this story, x won the BRIT Award for British Album of the Year. He also took the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year and played three sold out nights at Wembley Stadium in July. His third album, ÷, was the best selling record worldwide in 2017.
Why Sheeran Attended the Premiere
No source I found gives his personal reason. What is documented is the guest list. Press coverage places him at the London premiere alongside Eliza Doolittle and Rizzle Kicks, and Euronews reported that Rizzle Kicks performed the theme song.
So the room was full of music names. That is useful context, but it is not an explanation, and it would be a stretch to claim one.
What Happened Between Sean Connolly and Ed Sheeran?
Short answer: a near miss. The only first hand account is Connolly’s own blog, posted on 26 January 2015 under a headline that plays on Wallace and Gromit’s A Close Shave.
The 2015 Missed Meeting
The premiere was held on Sunday 25 January 2015 at the Vue West End cinema in Leicester Square. Aardman swapped the red carpet for a green one, and the evening supported Wallace and Gromit’s Children’s Charity.
Connolly brought his wife Bella and their daughter Erin. Erin is a big Sheeran fan. Her first ever concert was a Sheeran show at Madison Square Garden in New York, which the family caught while on holiday.
At the screening the family sat directly in front of Justin Fletcher, the voice of Shaun. What they did not know was that Sheeran was in the same screen, a couple of rows to their left. They only found out at the after party. Connolly described Erin as hugely disappointed, and said it would have been the perfect moment to say hello.
Connolly’s Attempt to Contact Sheeran
Connolly turned to social media. He tried to reach Sheeran on Twitter, then admitted that with roughly 12.3 million followers on Sheeran’s account, the message was unlikely to surface. He ended his post with an open invitation for Sheeran to get in touch.
I found no public record of a reply. If one exists, it has not been reported.
Did Sean Connolly and Ed Sheeran Work Together?
No. Their paths crossed at an event, not on a project. Connolly’s career sits in acting and voice work. Sheeran’s sits in songwriting, recording and touring.
No Documented Professional Collaboration
Nothing in the public record shows a shared song, film role, voice session or tour. Calling a shared audience a collaboration is the kind of leap that turns small stories into false ones.
Was Ed Sheeran in Shaun the Sheep Movie?
No. Cast lists for the film include Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes, Omid Djalili, Kate Harbour, Richard Webber and Connolly, among others. Sheeran is absent from them.
Understanding Sheeran’s Role
His link to the film was attending the premiere. That is a guest role, not a credited one. Some pages blur this line because “Sheeran” and “Shaun the Sheep” appear together in headlines, but the cast sheet settles it.
A Common Mix-Up: Sean Connolly and Nathan Connolly
Part of the confusion comes from a second Connolly who really does have a musical history with Sheeran.
Two Different People
Nathan Connolly is the Northern Irish lead guitarist of Snow Patrol, born on 20 January 1981. Sean Connolly is the actor and voice artist from this story. They are not related in any documented way, and they have different careers.
Nathan’s links to Sheeran are well recorded:
- May 2012: Sheeran opened for Snow Patrol in California and joined them for a duet.
- July 2015: At the Latitude Festival, Sheeran invited Nathan Connolly and drummer Jonny Quinn on stage for “Chasing Cars”.
- July 2022: Sheeran again appeared with Snow Patrol at Latitude.
If you read about Connolly and Sheeran performing together, it is almost certainly Nathan.
Why Are Sean Connolly and Ed Sheeran Connected Online?
Because one blog post gave search engines a rare pairing of two names. Connolly published it, fans of both repeated it, and a few sites later stretched it.
The Story Behind the Search Interest
Three things feed the curiosity:
- The surprise factor. A voice actor and a global star seated close together is a fun coincidence.
- The name clash. “Connolly” appears in both the film credits and the Snow Patrol lineup.
- The wording. Phrases such as “Ed Sheeran in Shaun the Sheep” invite readers to imagine a cameo that never happened.
The honest version is smaller, but it is verifiable.

Conclusion
The truth behind Sean Connolly and Ed Sheeran is gentle and a little funny. A voice actor, his family and a pop star watched the same animated film from nearby seats, and the one chance to say hello slipped by.
Nothing in the record points to a friendship, a family tie or a creative partnership. What you can trust is the simple chain: Connolly voiced ten characters, Sheeran attended the premiere, and a daughter’s disappointment became a small piece of internet trivia. When you see the surname Connolly next to Sheeran in a performance story, check which Connolly it is first.
